Ramadan Suhoor Iftar are significant events in Ramadan. Muslims make many common mistakes during Ramadan, and Suhoor, Iftar. This episode will focus on those mistakes and help you avoid them in the next Ramadan. So, let's jump into it.

Common Mistakes During Suhoor, Iftar

  • Continuing to eat during Suhoor after the beginning of Fajar Adhaan. As the Fajr Adhaan begins, the moment fo Suhoor ends' therefore, one must not eat Suhoor after Fajr Adhaan starts.
  • Delaying the Iftar. One must break his fast immediately after sunset. The Prophet (PBUH) said: "The people will remain on the right path as long as they hasten in breaking the fast." (Sahih Al Bukhari Vol.3 Hadith 1957) Another hadith says: "You should hasten in breaking the fast and delay in having the Suhoor." (Mu'jam At Tabaraani Al Kabeer Hadith 395)
  • Reciting the dua of Iftar before breaking the fast. The Iftar dua must not be recited before one has broken his fast and quenched his thirst.
  • Eating excessively during Suhoor and Iftar is also one of the common mistakes during Ramadan.
  • Eating through the night is also one of the common mistakes during Ramadan.
  • Having early Suhoor before Suhoor time. It is recommended to delay the Suhoor so that one can eat until before Fajr Adhaan.
  • Reciting unauthentic Dua for Suhoor time and Iftar time.
  • Missing Suhoor is another common mistake. Prophet (PBUH) said: "Suhoor is blessed, so don't leave it even if you have a gulp of water because Allah and his angels, they send blessings on the person that has Suhoor." (Musnad Ahmed Vol.17 Hadith 11086)

Common Mistakes During Ramadan

The following points illustrate the most common mistakes in Ramadan.

  • Not preparing mentally for the fast will not allow you to gain Taqwa and God-Consciousness.
  • Assuming that the 27th night is the Layalatul Qadr. It is advised to "search" for the Layatul Qadr in the last ten odd nights of Ramadan. As mentioned in the hadith, "Search for the Layatul Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan." (Sahih Al Bukhari Vol.3 Hadith 2017)
  • Being negligent about the Taraweeh prayers.
  • Wasting time on useless activities.
  • Reciting the Quran very fast during Taraweeh's prayers.
  • Socializing during I'tikaaf
  • Neglecting Dua and Istighfar
  • Not reciting the Quran
  • Not utilizing the last ten nights of Ramadan.
  • Not using Siwaak thinking that it will break the fast.
  • Not sniffing water in the nostrils during wudhu.
  • Delaying Zakat ul Fitr until after the Eid ul Fitr Salaah.

Indulging in Prohibited Acts

Indulging in prohibited acts is one of the most common mistakes during Ramadan. The prohibited acts include:

  • Backbiting and Slandering.
  • Using false speech and lying.
  • Using abusive and vulgar language
  • Gossiping
  • Wasting food, spending excessively, surfing un-Islamic websites, watching un-Islamic programs, and listening to songs are also common mistakes during Ramadan.
  • Reading un-Islamic magazines is also a prohibited act during Ramadan. Read Quran instead!

Negligence in Performing FARAA'IDH

The negligence in performing obligatory duties is also one of the common mistakes during Ramadan. These Faraa'idh include:

  • Missing Fajr and other prayers
  • Not giving Zakaat
  • Not calculating Zakaat properly

Errors Involving Cultural Practices and Traditions

  • Sleeping the whole day.
  • Socializing too much.
  • Spending the nights shopping.
  • Killing time by doing un-Islamic activities.
  • Roaming too much
