Lesson 1 – Qadhaa Fasts, Fidyah And Kaffaarah of Fasts

This blog will focus on the Qada fasting, Fidyah, and Kaffaarah. As discussed in the previous blog, the word Qada means to fulfill or compensate.

Qada Fasting

Qada fasting is a type of fast that is compensatory for those fasts which were due, and they could not be executed for some reason.

“(Fasting) for a fixed number of days; but if any of you is ill or on a journey, the prescribed number (should be made up) from days later.” (Al Quran 2:184)

Fidyah

Fidyah fasting is a type of fast that is the compensation for a fast which could not be kept due to some permanent disability or some disease. The compensation is made by feeding a poor person for every fast missed. Fidyah needs to be paid for every fast missed.

“For those who can do it (With hardship), is a ransom, the feeding of one that is indigent.” (Al Quran 2:184)

Kaffaraah of Fasts

The word Kaffaarah is derived from the word ‘Kufr,’ which means to conceal, to hide, to cover. In the context of fasting, Kaffaarah for fasting is required when a person willfully breaks the Fardh fast, i.e., during Ramadhaan, by having sexual intercourse with one’s wife.

In this scenario, one has to first compensate the fast as early as possible after Ramadhaan. Second, one should give Kaffaraah by either one of the three options:

  • Free a slave.
  • Fast for 60 consecutive days (Kaffarah Fasting)
  • Feed 60 poor people.

When you miss a fast willingly, you have to pay the Kaffarrah for it.

Qada fasting and Fidyah fasting are almost the same, with the only difference being that Qada fasting is necessary when you miss a fast for some unusual reason, while as compared to Qada fasting, Fidyah fasting is necessary when you miss fasts due to a permanent illness.

FAQ

Qada fasting is a type of fast that is compensatory for those fasts which were due, and they could not be executed for some reason.

It is the same as breaking a compulsory fast.

One should give Kaffaraah by either one of the three options: • Free a slave. • Fast for 60 consecutive days (Kaffarah Fasting) • Feed 60 poor people.

Qada and Fidyah are the Kaffaraah for not fasting, depending on the reason for not fasting. If you are permanently disabled, you will have to give Fidyah, and if you missed a fast due to some sudden reason, you have to do Qada.
