Lesson 14 – Qiyaam ul Layl – Part 2

Qiyamul Lail prayer time is after Isha until the break of dawn. Taraweeh is also a type of this prayer. On the nights of Ramadan, it yields even greater rewards as compared to any other night.

Forgiveness of Sins

Prophet (PBUH) said: “Anyone who offers the night prayer in the month of Ramadan with belief and with seeking Allah’s reward, all his past sins will be forgiven.”  (Sahih Al Bukhari Vol 3 Hadith 2009)

There was a person who came to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and asked him: “What if I say that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah (SWT) who has no partners and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) of Allaah (SWT); and if I offer the five obligatory prayers; and if I fast in the month of Ramadhaan; and if I pray in the night during Ramadhaan and I perform Qiyaamul Lail only in Ramadhaan, and if I give Zakah; Then what is my position?” to which Holy Prophet (PBUH) replied:

“Anyone who does all these things will be amongst the Siddiqeen, i.e., the righteous people, and among the Shuhadaa, i.e., the martyrs.” (Saheeh Ibn Hibbaan – Vol 8 Hadeeth 3438)

Time Period for Qiyamul Lail

Holy Prophet (PBUH) said: “Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “Allaah (SWT) has added one more prayer, i.e.the Witr. So pray Witr between ‘Ishaa and Fajr.” (Musnad Ahmad – Vol 6 Hadeeth 23963)

The most preferred Qiyamul Lail prayer time is the last third of the night.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“The closest a servant is to his Creator, Allaah (SWT), is during the last third of the night. And if he prays to Him during that time, it is the best.” (Sunan At Tirmidhi – Vol 6 Hadeeth 3579)

Etiquettes

Qiyamul Lail has to be performed with some etiquettes. These etiquettes, if not followed, can lead to your prayer becoming useless. If you want to gain the maximum profit by your prayer, make sure to follow the etiquettes. A few of the etiquettes are discussed here:

  • Make an intention as it is Sunnah.
  • Perform Wudhu just like any other prayer. It is obligatory.
  • Use a Siwaak to clean your mouth.
  • Make a sincere intention to attain the pleasure of Allah and to attain the reward from Allah.
  • Make sure to supplicate and ask for forgiveness from Allah (SWT)
  • Show gratitude towards Allah (SWT)
  • During this prayer, lengthen the actions like performing Ruko, Sujood, etc.
  • Lengthen the recitation of the Quran in the prayer. At Times, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) Would Recite More Than 5 Juz In Just One Raka’aah!
  • Do not raise your voice in prayer
  • Perform the prayer in the sequence of 2 Rak’aat, then end the prayer with three Rak’aat.
  • This prayer can be performed individually or in the congregation.
