AL HIDAAYAH

Lesson 3 : Zakaah – Part 3

One of the five pillars of Islam. Zakah meaning in literal terms, is “to cleanse.” Zakah in Islam is a source to purify your wealth. It is an obligatory charity payable by every Muslim who has savings or surplus wealth, which has reached the level of Nisaab (a determined threshold) over a specific lunar year. If the Nisaab is reached, then usually, an amount of 2.5% of the total surplus amount should be paid as charity.

Allah mentions in the Quran:

“Of their goods, take alms, that you might purify and sanctify them; and pray on their behalf. Verily your prayers are a source of security for them: And Allaah (SWT) is One Who hears and knows.” (Al Quran 9:103)

If every wealthy person in the world gives this charity, poverty will be eradicated from this world. There will not be a single human being who will die of hunger.

Why Should it be Given?

  • It can help you perfect your faith
  • It increases unity
  • It purifies your wealth

The Items Upon Which Charity is Due

It is due on a fixed percentage of the following items. Gold, silver, money in cash and bank, farm and agricultural products, stock in trade, business receivables, loans given, and surplus personal assets behind the basic requirements.

Conditions that make Charity Obligatory

  • Being Muslim.
  • Free Citizen.
  • Sole owner of the surplus wealth.
  • Surplus wealth must be with the owner for a whole lunar year.
  • It must be paid from lawful earnings.

Conditions for Nisaab

  • The amount should be above the basic requirements that, according to Shar’eeah, one requires to live.
  • The wealth must be in possession of the owner for at least one lunar year.
  • Nisaab for gold is 85 grams. For silver, it is 595 grams.

Categories Zakah can be Given to

“Aims are for the poor and the needy, and those employed to administer the (funds); for those whose hearts have been (recently) reconciled (to Truth); for those in bondage and in debt; in the cause of Allaah (SWT); and for the wayfarer: (thus is it) ordained by Allaah (SWT), and Allaah (SWT) is full of knowledge and wisdom.” (Al Quran: 9:60)

All the people who don’t have a source of income and are suffering from financial crisis or oppression (slaves) are eligible for it.

Zakah and Sadaqah

There are significant differences between the two. Zakah is obligatory. Sadaqah isn’t.

Other differences are elaborated in detail as we sit with Dr. Zakir Naik to discuss Zakah in islam in detail. Enroll in our course to learn more.
