Lesson 4 – Geology & Oceanography

Geology is the study of the earth’s geography, while oceanography is the study of oceans and what’s underneath them. The Holy Quran is a source of immense knowledge. Today, we will look at geology in Quran and also dive into oceanography discussed in the Quran.

Geology in Quran

Mountains are like pegs (stakes). Recent advancement in science has led to the discovery of a phenomenon named “folding” that is said to be the reason for the formation of mountains. The discovery further tells us that the surface (crust) of the earth that we live on is like a solid shell. The crust is thin, and it shakes. The mountains act as pegs that hold the crust and provide stability to it.

Can you imagine that this discovery was listed in geology in Quran 1400 years ago?
“Have We not made the earth as a wide expanse, and the mountains as pegs?” (Al Quran 78:6-7)

Firm Mountains

Mountain forming is a complicated process. The surface where mountains are formed is rigid and fixed. Another verse dedicated to geology in Quran says:

“And the mountains has He firmly fixed.” (Al Quran 79:32)

Another fact discovered by scientists is present in verse dedicated to geology in Quran:

“And We have set on the earth mountains standing firm, lest it should shake with them.” (Al Quran 21:31)

There are many more verses dedicated to geology in Quran. For better understanding, you should enroll in our course to understand the geology in Quran and modern research by scientists.

Oceanography

According to modern scientists, the point where two seas meet consists of a barrier. This barrier isn’t physical, but it divides the two seas to retain their original properties. The Quran mentioned the barrier’s existence 1400 years ago:

“And made a separating bar between the two seas (Can there be another).” (Al Quran 27:61)

Modern research shows that the barrier is also present in estuaries where fresh water and saltwater meet. The partition (barrier) has salinity different than both freshwater and saltwater.

“It is He Who has let free the two bodies of flowing water: One palatable and sweet, and the other salt and bitter; yet has He made a barrier between them, a partition that is not to be passed.” (Al Quran 25:53)

This phenomenon is seen in various places. One of the examples in Egypt, where the River Nile flows into the Mediterranean sea. This shows the validity of the verses related to geology and oceanography in the Quran.

Darkness in the Depths of the Ocean

An expert in marine geology, Prof. Durga Rao, was asked to comment on the following verse of the Holy Quran regarding the darkness in the depths of the ocean:

“Or (the Unbelievers’ state) is like the depths of darkness in a vast deep ocean, overwhelmed with billow topped by billow, topped by (dark) clouds: Depths of darkness, one above another: if a man stretches out his hand, he can hardly see it! For any to whom Allah gives not light, there is no light!” (Al Quran 24:40)

Prof. Durga Rao admitted that only the latest research has proved this verse to be true. He said that 1400 years ago, no normal human could’ve said this sort of thing.

To know more about the geology in Quran, enroll in our course as Dr. Zakir Naik will be with us to discuss the topic in detail.
