Lesson 4 : Significance of Ka'bah & Makkah

“We see the turning of your face (for guidance) to the heavens: now Shall We turn thee to a Qiblah that shall please thee. Turn then your face in the direction of the Sacred Mosque: wherever you are, turn your faces in that direction…” (Al Qur’an 2:144)

Many people ask why Muslims worship Kaaba when idol worshipping in Islam is not allowed and why non-Muslims are not allowed in the holy cities of Makkah and Medina. They also ask about the significance of Kaaba in Islam. Let us answer these questions.

Muslims Worship The Kaaba in Islam

Kaaba is the Qibla, the direction to which Muslims pray. They don’t worship it. For Muslims, there is a huge significance of Kaaba in Islam.

Islam Believes In Unity:

If Muslims wish to pray, some might pray in one direction and others in another. To prevent this and to build up unity, a center point has been chosen so that all Muslims can pray. The significance of Kaaba is that it unites Muslims.

Kaaba Is At The Centre Of The World Map

Muslims were the first people who drew the world map, and in this map, Kab’ah was at the center. Thus all Muslims bow down to the center of the world, which is a significance of Kaaba.

Tawaaf Around The Kaaba Is For Indicating One God

Tawaaf is when Muslims circle around the Kaaba. Since a circle has one center, the tawaaf also indicates one God. This is also a significance of Kaaba as all Muslims revolve around it.

Hadith Of Umar (May Allah Be Pleased With Him)

Regarding the black stone, there is hadith of Hazrat Umar AS. It states that

“No doubt I know that you are a stone and can neither benefit nor harm. Had I not seen the Prophet (PBUH) touching (and kissing) you, I would never have touched (and kissed) you.”Sahih Al Bukhari – Vol 2 Hadith 1597

People Stood On The Kaaba And Gave The Adhaan

At the time of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), people used to stand on the Kaaba to give adhan. If Muslims worshipped the Kaaba, they would have never stood on it to give azan.

Non-Muslims Not Allowed In Makkah

Apart from the significance of Kaaba for Muslims, non-Muslims cannot enter Makkah due to several reasons:

All Citizens Are Not Permitted In The Cantonment Area

Just like in every country, there is a cantonment and military area where civilians are not allowed; in this way, Madinah and Mecca for Muslims hold significance, and other people are not allowed to enter.

Visa To Enter Makkah And Madinah

When people visit a certain country, they have to apply for a visa and fulfill certain criteria, without which the visa cannot be issued. UAE is quite strict in this regard. The primary condition for a person to visit Makkah and Madina is to be a Muslim. This is the significance of Mecca and Madina.
