Lesson 5 – Concept of God in Judaism

“Verily, those who believe (in Allah and in His Messenger Muhammad), and those who are Jews, and the Sabians, and the Christians, and the Magians, and those who worship others besides Allah, truly, Allah will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection. Verily! Allah is Witness over all things.” (Quran 22:17)

Introduction to Concept of God in Judaism

Many people ask what is the concept of God in Judaism. Thus in this lesson, we will explain the concept of God in Judaism. It is also a monotheistic religion. In this lesson, we will review the concept of God in Judaism, Islam, and Christianity.

What is Judaism Religion

They are known as Jews. They believe in the teachings of Prophet Moses. It is a major Semitic religion. It has its roots in the Middle Eastern region.

In order to explain the concept of God in Judaism, we will go through some scriptures.

The book of Deuteronomy

It is a book that contains teachings from Moses. The following Hebrew verse:

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord, our God is one Lord.”

The Bible – Deuteronomy 6:4

This clearly indicates that in Judaism, there is a concept of a single God.

Book of Isaiah

Consider the following verses from the book of Isiah. This indicates that the concept of God in Judaism is solely based on monotheism.

  • “I, even I, am the Lord, and beside me, there is no savior.” The Bible – Isaiah 43:11
  • “I am Lord, and there is none else. There is no God besides Me.” The Bible – Isaiah 45:5
  • “I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like Me.” The Bible – Isaiah 46:9

Judaism Condemns Idol Worship

Judaism condemns idol worship in the following verses,

“Thou shalt have no other gods before Me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor see them; for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God….”

The Bible – Exodus 20:3-5

Concept of God in Judaism

According to the above verse, the concept of God in Judaism is based on the following points

  • God is one
  • No image of God should be made
  • There is no one like him
  • They should not worship anyone else.

If we look closely at the points, it shows that the concept of God in Judaism, Islam, and Christianity is quite similar. The scriptures or the books tell us about the religion in true sense. They believe in a single God who is all supreme and mighty. The religion also condemns worshipping idols, indicating that only God should be worshipped.

Similar Message in Book of Deuteronomy

A similar message about the concept of God and his oneness is repeated in the book of Deuteronomy, indicating the importance of this message. Looking at the scriptures and verses, we can get true knowledge about Judaism.
