Lesson 6 – Concept of God in Christianity

“I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge; and my judgment is just; because I seek not my own will, but the will of the Father, which hath sent me.” The Bible – John 5:30

The Concept of God in Christianity

It is curious to know what is the concept of God in Christianity. The concept of God in Christianity is based on monotheism. In this lesson, we will discuss Christianity and then compare the concept of God in Islam and Christianity.

What is Christianity Religion?

Christianity is a Semitic religion. It has the most followers in the world. They consider Jesus Christ as their God. Jesus Christ is also highly esteemed in Islam.

Position of Jesus in Islam

Let us know about Jesus Christ in Islam,

  • All Muslims believe in Jesus Christ.
  • They consider him the mightiest prophet.
  • He was born without a father.
  • He gave life to the dead and healed the blind and leapers.

Jesus (PBUH) never claimed divinity

The difference between Christianity and Islam is that they imposed divinity on Jesus. Although looking at the teachings of Christianity, the concept of God in Christianity is also based on Jesus being the preacher of religion. Even Bible claims him not divine,

“My Father is Greater than I” The Bible – John 14:28

“…I cast out devils by the spirit of God….” The Bible – Matthew 12:28

The mission of Jesus Christ (PBUH)– He came to fulfill the law

Jesus came not to claim divinity but on the mission of God to teach Judaic laws. This is clearly evident from the following statement,

“Think not that I came to destroy the law, or the Prophets; I did not come to destroy, but to fulfill. For verily, I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.”

God sent Jesus

The Bible claims this in the following verse,

“.. and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which has sent me.” The Bible – John 14:24

This clearly states that Jesus is not divine but sent by God to preach His teachings.

Jesus (PBUH) Refuted Even a Remote Suggestion of His Divinity

There is an incident mentioned in Bible in which Jesus refutes being divine. He asks people to follow the commandments of God.

Jesus (PBUH) of Nazareth- a Man, Approved of God

The following verse supports him being the prophet.,

“Ye men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus Of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know.” The Bible – Acts 2:22

Thus the concept of God in Christianity is not based on Jesus being the God but on the existence of a superior being and Jesus being there to teach the commandments. Looking at this, the concept of God in Christianity and Islam is not much different.

The First Commandment is that God is One:

When Jesus was asked about the first commandment, he replied with a quote from Moses

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord.”

The Bible – Mark 12:

This indicates that he came to teach the concept of God in Christianity.
