Introduction to Eid Al Fitr
What is Eid al Fitr? Eid is derived from the word “Ada,” which is something habitual, such as a custom or tradition. It also refers to something that repeats itself. Eid al Fitr meaning is a custom in Islam that brings happiness every year.
Eid Salaah
There are different opinions among famous scholars regarding the compulsion of Eid al Fitr Salaah. However, according to Imam Abu Hanifah (Rahimahullah), it is compulsory.
Time to Perform Eid al Fitr Salaah
- After Fajr and before Zuhr prayer
- Before the voluntary prayers can be performed.
There was an incident where Abdullah bin Busr, a companion of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), criticized the delay of Imam in Eid al Fitr Salaah.
Recommended Acts
- One should offer the Eid Salaah in a Musala (An open ground, Eidga). Narrated Abu Saeed Al Khudri (RA): Holy Prophet (PBUH) used to proceed to the Musala (Praying place) on the days of Eid al Fitr and Eid al Adhaa..” (Sahih Al Bukhari Vol.2 Hadith 956)
- Women should also go for Eid Salaah.
- It is Sunnah to pray the Friday (Juma) Salaah after the Eid Salaah if the Eid is on Friday.
- No Sunnah prayer can be offered before or immediately after Eid Salaah. Narrated Ibn Abbas (RA): “The Holy Prophet (PBUH) came out on the day of Eid al Fitr and prayed two Raka’at. He didn’t pray before or after them.” (Sunan Abu Dawood Vol.1 Hadith 1159)
The Eid Salaah
- The Eid Salaah has two Raka’at. It has seven Takbeers in the first Raka’ah and five Takbeers in the second Raka’ah before the recitation of Surah al Fatihah.
- It is Sunnah to recite Surah al Qaaf and Surah al Qamar in the first and second Rak’aah, respectively. Surah al Alaa and Surah al Ghaashiyah are also Sunnah to recite in the same order.
- Khutbah (Sermon) is given after the Eid Salaah. Listening to this sermon is recommended but not compulsory.
- “Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is no one worthy of worship besides Allah. Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. All Praises are Due to Allah.” This is the Talbiyah to recite from the moment you leave the house until the Eid Salaah.
- If someone misses the Eid Salaah, he should perform it as soon as possible or on the next day.
Prohibited to Fast on Eid
Narrated Ibn Abbas (RA): “The Holy Prophet (PBUH) forbade fasting on two days; the day of Eid al Adha, and the day of Eid al Fitr.” (Sahih Muslim Vol.3 Hadith 2672)
Recommended Acts
- Perform Ghusl. Wear nice clothes and perfume.
- Eat dates before leaving for Eid Salah.
- Recite Talbiyah when you leave the house for Eid Salaah until the end of Salaah.
- Take a different route to come back after the Eid Salaah.
