Lesson 6 - Introduction & Prohibition of Alcohol in Islam

“O you who believe! Intoxicants and Gambling, (Dedication of) stones, and (divination by) arrows, are an abomination – of Satan’s handiwork; eschew such (abomination), that you may prosper.” Al Qur’an 5:90

Why is alcohol forbidden in Islam? There is a prohibition of alcohol in Islam. Islam forbids its use, but there are reasons for prohibition of alcohol in Islam.

Prohibition of Alcohol in Islam, Why?

Prohibition in Bible

Not only Quran but the bible also prohibits the use of alcohol. Bible states that

“Wine is a mocker; strong drink is raging, And whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.”

The Bible – Proverbs 20:1

Alcohol Inhibits The Inhibitory Center

Human beings possess an inhibitory center which is inhibited by the consumption of alcohol. This inhibitory center prevents us from doing immoral deeds. It is the main reason for the prohibition of alcohol in Islam, as this can lead to all the wrong deeds.

Cases of Adultery, Rape, Incest, and Aids are Found more among Alcoholics

According to the many surveys that were carried out, they clearly indicate that all the social evils increased in society due to alcoholism. As Islam is against social evils, the prohibition of alcohol in Islam is justified.

Every Alcoholic was Initially a Social Drinkers

It is said that many people claim to have self-control over themselves; they call themselves social drinkers. Every alcoholic first starts off small and then becomes a full-blown addict.

If a Person is Intoxicated Just Once and Commits Something Shameful, it will Remain with him for a Lifetime

A deed done once can’t be taken back. Since an intoxicated person is not completely in his senses, he can commit crimes or such acts for which he’ll remain forever shameful.

Alcohol is Prohibited in The Hadith

There is a prohibition of alcohol in Islam, and not only Quran but the hadith also states it. Hadith mentions three aspects

  1. Alcohol – the key to all evils

Hadith mentions alcohol as a key to all social evils. A society with having large consumption of alcohol is surrounded by many social evils.

B There is no excuse for a nip or a tot

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“…Anything which intoxicates in a large Quantity is prohibited even in a small quantity.”

Sunan Ibn Maajah – Vol 4 Hadith 3392

  1. Even those who deal with alcohol indirectly are cursed.

This can clearly state how much prohibition of alcohol is there in Islam. Hadith mentions not only those drinking alcohol in Islam are cursed but also those dealing indirectly with it.
