Lesson 2 – Astronomy

Astronomy in Quran is a diverse topic. Many statements in the Quran regarding astronomy have proven to be true after research. Today, we will look at the verses involving astronomy in Quran.

Astronomy in Quran: The Big Bang Theory

According to the scientific big bang theory, the whole universe was a huge collective mass. Then, a big bang (explosion) divided this huge mass into galaxies, planets, and stars. What if we tell you that this theory was accurately mentioned in astronomy in Quran 1400 years ago?

“Do not the Unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together (as one unit of Creation) before We clove them asunder?” (Al Quran 21:30)

The accuracy of the astronomy in Quran is astonishing!

The scientists also say that celestial matter was in the form of gases before the formation of galaxies; Allah (SWT) also discussed this in the Quran. He used the word “Smoke” to refer to the gaseous matter:

“Then He turned to the sky, and it had been (as) smoke: He said to it and to the earth: “Come you together, willingly or unwillingly.” They said: “We do come together, in willing obedience.” (Al Quran 41:11)

The Shape of Earth

The general notion about the shape of Earth 1400 years ago was that the earth is flat. However, the Quran uses the word “Dahaha” to describe the earth’s shape. Dahaha means an ostrich egg which indicates that the earth is spherical.

“And the earth, moreover, has He extended (to a wide expanse).” (Al Quran 79:30)

The Light of Moon

The Quran mentions how the light of moon is a reflected light. Scientific research discovered this fact not many centuries ago. The Quran mentioned this fact 1400 years ago when no one would’ve thought that the moon doesn’t have its own light.

“Blessed is He Who made constellations in the skies and placed therein a lamp and a moon giving light.” (Al Quran 25:61)

The fact that the moon gives off the light of the sun is a recent discovery made by science. Allah (SWT) told us about this in astronomy in Quran 1400 years ago:
“See you not how Allah has created the seven heavens one above another. And made the moon a light in their midst, and made the sun as a (glorious) lamp?” (Al Quran 71:15-16)

Rotation of Sun

The rotation of the sun is also a recent discovery of science. Still, it is mentioned in verses related to astronomy in Quran.

“It is He Who created the night and the day, and the sun and the moon: All (the
celestial bodies) swim along, each in its rounded course.” (Al Quran 21:33)

Sun Will Extinguish After a Certain Period

We all know that the light of the sun is due to the chemical processes that occur on its surface. They will come to an end one day, and the sun will extinguish at some point. The Quran told us this 1400 years ago:

“And the sun runs unto a resting place for him that is the decree of (Him) the Exalted in Might, the All-Knowing.” (Al Quran 36:38)

The other verses related to astronomy in Quran also refer to some huge scientific facts, such as the sky being a protective ceiling, the presence of interstellar matter, and the expansion of the universe:

“And We have made the heavens as a canopy well-guarded.” (Al Quran 36:38)

“He Who created the heavens and the earth and all that is between.” (Al Quran 25:59)

“We have built the Firmament with might. And We indeed have vast power.” (Al Quran 51:47)

Stephen Hawking, who was a brilliant scientist, said that the discovery of the expansion of the universe was a great leap in the 20th century. The Quran mentioned it 1400 years ago! To learn more about astronomy in Quran, join us by enrolling in our course, as Dr. Zakir Naik will teach us more!
