Lesson 7 – Embryology

Embryology in Quran is also a branch of science that is discussed. Professor Moore, who was the professor of embryology and chairman of the Department of Anatomy at the University
Of Toronto, in Canada. Back then, he was one of the highest authorities in the field of embryology. He was asked to give his opinion on the field of embryology in Quran. Dr. Moore, after examining the Quranic verses, said that the verses of the Holy Quran are accurate as compared to the modern research results.

Man Created from Alaq

Embryology in Quran is present in the form of several verses. About the creation of man, Quran says:

“Proclaim! (Or Read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created. Created man, out of a leech-like Clot.” (Al Quran 96:1-2)

After studying this verse, Dr. Moore discovered that the initial stage of an embryo looked like a leech.

Man Created from a Drop Emitted from Between the Backbone and the Ribs

Embryology in Quran accurately states the process of initiation of birth.

“Now let man but think from what he is created! He is created from a drop emitted. Proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs.” (Al Quran 86:5-7)

Nutfah

The meaning of Nutfah is “a drop of liquid.” It is defined as the last drop that remains in a cup after emptying it. The Quran mentions in around 11 verses about Nutfah being the reason for the birth of man. Science has also proved this fact about embryology in Quran as research showed that out of the nearly three million sperms ejected during reproduction, only one is required for fertilization.

And made his progeny from a quintessence of despised fluid.” (Al Quran 32:8)

“Verily We created Man from a drop of mingled sperm.” (Al Quran 76:2)

Sex Determination

According to modern research, the sex of a child is determined by the 23rd chromosome pair. XX pair means the sex is female, while XY pair means that the sex is male. It wasn’t possible to know this information 1400 years ago, but it is the glory of the Almighty that he mentioned this in the Quran 1400 years ago:

“Was he not a drop of sperm emitted (in lowly form)? Then did (Allah) make and fashion (him) in due proportion. And of him He made two sexes, male and female.” (Al Quran 75:37-39)

Foetus Protected

The Holy Quran mentions the three veils of darkness that protect the foetus.

“He creates you, in the wombs of your mothers, in stages, one after another, in three veils of darkness.” (Al Quran 39:6)

The research of Dr. Moore identified these three veils as:

  1. The anterior abdominal wall of the mother
  2. Uterine wall
  3. Amnio Chorionic membrane

This proof also signifies the accuracy of the topics of embryology discussed in the Quran.

Embryonic Stages

1400 years ago Quran also mentioned the embryonic stages that were discovered centuries later.

“We created you out of dust, then out of sperm, then out of a leech-like clot, then out
of a morsel of flesh, partly formed and partly unformed.” (Al Quran 22:5)

Sense of Hearing and Sight

The sense of hearing and sight are developed in an embryo after the 24th and 28th week of formation, respectively.

“It is He Who has created for you (the faculties of) hearing, sight, feeling, and understanding: little thanks it is you give!” (Al Quran 23:78)
