Lesson 8 – Tawheed
“”If thou ask them, Who created them, they will certainly say, Allah: how then are they deluded away (from the Truth)?”” Qur’an 43:87
In this lesson, we will learn about Tawhid. We will learn Tawheed’s meaning and categories.
Attributes of God
- To Allah belongs the most beautiful names
“”Say: Call upon Allah or Call upon Rahman: By whatever name you call upon Him, (it is well): for to Him belong The Most Beautiful Names.”” Qur’an 17:110
There are almost 99 attributes mentioned in Quran.
- Each attribute to God is unique and only from him
All the attributes belong only to him. If we call him the creator of the universe, he is the lone creator.
Some of his attributes are “Ar Rahee” – The Most Merciful“Ar Rahma” – The Most Gracious“Al Hakeem” – The Wisest
These attributes are unique to him
- The attributes must not contradict each other
The attributes of God must be true without any contradiction. If we say he is the creator with hands and feet, then the attribute creator is true, but the human-like image is not.
Many religions believe in polytheism, but the main concept of Tawhid in Islam is one God.
All Religions Ultimately Believe in Monotheism
To Allah belongs the most beautiful names
All religions ultimately believe in one supreme God and monotheism. Many religions change the scriptures for their own benefit.
Tawhid Definition
Tawheed definition is simple. Tawheed meaning is oneness. All Muslims believe in monotheism.
There are three categories of Tawhid. Namely,
A. Tawheed Ar Ruboobiyyah
Ruboobiyyah is derived from the Arabic word Rabb. This category believes that Allah is. The lone creator of everything.
B. Tawheed Al Asmaa Was Sifaat
This means the uniqueness of Allah’s names. It has five aspects.
- Allah must be referred to as described by the Prophets.
- Allah must be referred to as He refers to himself.
- Allah should not be given attributes of his creation
C. Tawheed Al Ibaadah or Uloohiyyah
Ibaadah means to worship. All creations must worship God and follow His commandments.
All these categories of Tawhid must be practiced.“And most of them believe not in Allah without associating (others as partners) with Him” AlQur’an 12:106
Thus ibaadah means worshipping one God.
Shirk
When any criteria of Tawhid are not fulfilled, it is known as shirk.
Shirk is the Greatest Sin
As mentioned in Quran, “Allah forgives not that partners should be set up with Him; but He forgives anything else, to whom He pleases; to set up partners with Allah is to devise a sin most heinous indeed” AlQur’an 4:48
Shirk Leads to Hellfire
Whoever does shirk will face hellfire. On the day of judgment, they will be condemned to severe punishment. Tawhid is essential for being a Muslim. To believe in the oneness of God and not associate any partners with him is essential.
“Revile not those whom they call upon besides Allah, lest they insult Allah in their ignorance” AlQur’an 6:108
